Hout Bay has one of the most successful recycling centres in the whole of Africa, namely the Hout Bay Recycling Depot. Operated by Envirochild - www.envirochild.org, this Section 21 company [a non-profit organisation] aims to promote environmental consciousness and education amongst children and young adults. They promote localisation of services, food production and resource usage as well as many, many other initiatives.

Where possible at 6 in the Circle we support Envirochild by recycling as much as we can at the Hout Bay Recycling Depot. We offer a free service to our guests that involves the daily collection of recycling [bottles, tins, paper, cardboard etc] from each of the suites and we transport it to the local recycling centre in Hout Bay on their behalf.

All garden waste is composted and each year ploughed back into the beds as rich and nutritious mulch and compost. Even our vegetable and fruit peelings and used tea bags are put to good use; they feed our two wormeries which produce the most wonderfully nourishing ‘worm wee’. This is watered back into the garden either by watering can or foliage spray. This home-made plant feed beats any commercially bought product we’ve ever used.

We grow vegetables and herbs for our own personal consumption which include; tomatoes, lettuce, pumpkin, butternut squash, gem squash, courgette, chilli, spinach, beetroot, onion, leeks, celery and many herbs.

Our swimming pool has been converted to a salt-water chlorinator system which utilises less chemical input and is certainly kinder on your skin and hair. The heating for the pool is provided by solar roofing panels.

Our in-house laundry utilises where possible environmentally friendly products and we rarely wash laundry above 40 degrees. Energy saving light bulbs are installed where possible to reduce our overall electrical output.

Our garden is watered via an automatic hi-tech watering system. This is operated by a timer to eliminate water wastage, and is done in the very early hours of the morning to avoid fast evaporation from solar radiation.
